Bahamian Folklore

Updated: Sep 28, 2022

In The Bahamas, when the current go off, the storm outside whistles with its wind in the palm trees, stories of old come to light.

Lantern lit nights, maybe dominoes gets cracked open, stories/history throughout The Bahamas are told mainly by word-of-mouth.

Many we have probably forgotten over time, as that is all we knew, these wild stories that grandma pulled from seemingly nowhere. Or told to her by her aunt who lived on the raw Out Islands.

In this blogpost I will be touching on some beloved and maybe even unknown folklores and stories from all islands of The Bahamas. Stay tuned.

Brer Booky 'n Brer Rabby

Where do I start with these two! Brer Booky and Brer Rabby are characters that all 'ole school' Bahamians grew up listening about. They were a pair of acquaintances, as I would say, a silly goat and a clever rabbit. Both getting into some mischievous and many times whimsical escapades. Looking back at their stories now, absolutely love them even more. Back as a youngin, I just thought they were naggy and silly. But as you get older you realize these little stories that the older folks told you, passed down to you, they were lessons.

There are many stories featuring these two and to make it quiet simple for anyone curious about them, I have done a video on youtube :) Told by word-of-mouth, just as tradition calls for. Here is the link:

Hope you enjoy even though it was one of my first recordings! If you're a Bahamian, do you remember this story? Have any more you would like to share? Contact me or leave a comment!
